Professor Blythe is a public health physician and pain epidemiologist, whose work has made a major contribution to understanding how pain conditions affect populations, and also to the growing recognition of pain as a major public health problem and as the leading contributor to the global burden of disability. She has also worked in promoting the uptake and use of research evidence in pain education, and in global and national health policy.
