This webinar will take place on 16 September 2026 at 10:00 am EDT
Free to IASP Members; $25.00 for non-members
This webinar will introduce the role and relevance of lived experience in the development, conduct, dissemination, and implementation of pain research. It will describe recent work in this area, including the establishment of the Global Alliance of Partners for Pain Advocacy (GAPPA). We will discuss the ways in which people with lived experience of pain collaborate with researchers, the barriers and facilitators to such co-creative work, and how people with lived experience of pain, clinicians, and researchers – together – can help to improve our understanding of pain and the lives of people who live with it. In pain research there is no “them” and “us” – there is only “us”.
Educational Objectives
After attending this webinar, participants will have developed their understanding of:
1. the importance of lived experience in pain research
2. barriers and facilitators for contributing lived experience to pain research
3. the development and role of GAPPA in addressing these issues

Presenters
Joletta Belton, Pain Advocate, Past Co-Chair of GAPPA.
Blair H. Smith MD, University of Dundee, Past Co-Chair of GAPPA.
Dawn Gibson, Pain Advocate.
Joletta Belton, MSc
Advocate
Independent Patient Advocate
Joletta is a fierce advocate for the integration of lived experience into the research, study, and treatment of pain. She came to this work through her own experiences of living with chronic pain and struggling to find adequate care, resources, and support after an on-the-job injury as a firefighter. She began writing a blog to try and make sense of things, which led to invitations to speak at conferences and to partner in pain research, education, and publishing.
She was invited to a meeting at the 2018 World Congress on Pain to discuss how IASP could meaningfully integrate lived experience into its work. In 2019, the Presidential Task Force that became the Global Alliance of Partners for Pain Advocacy (GAPPA) was formed, and Joletta became the founding Co-Chair with Blair. She currently serves as GAPPA Past Co-chair.
